Several journalists, civil society representatives and students of the Moldova School of Journalism participated on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, in a flashmob entitled #StopWar! held by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) in front of the headquarters of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Moldova. The event took place on World Press Freedom Day, with the aim of paying tribute to journalists who were killed while carrying out their mission to inform the public.<\/p>\r\n

Participants displayed the message “Killing journalists will not hide the horrors of war!” as well as photos of seven journalists killed while reporting on the war in Ukraine, according to the organizations Reporters<\/a> without Borders and Committee<\/a> to Protect Journalists: Evgeny Sakun, Brent Renaud, Pierre Zakrzewski, Oleksandra Kuvshynova, Oksana Baulina, Max Levin and Mantas Kvedaravicius.<\/p>\r\n

“We believe that war crimes can be qualified when journalists are arrested, detained, tortured, deliberately killed. Those responsible for war crimes should bear responsibility according to national and international law. We have come in front of the Embassy of the Russian Federation because we say in the strongest possible terms that this is abuse against freedom of the press, against freedom in Ukraine,” stated Nadine Gogu, IJC Executive Director.<\/p>\r\n

Press Freedom Days in the Republic of Moldova will continue until May 31, 2022. As part of them, the IJC launched the Memorandum on freedom of the press during the period May 3, 2021 \u2013 May 3, 2022, signed by several media organizations, and the portal Media Azi announced an information campaign in which several journalists from Ukraine talk about how journalism has changed in the neighboring country since February 24, 2022.<\/p>\r\n
