The Independent Journalism Center (IJC) expresses its deep concern and strongly condemns the intensification of denigration and harassment campaigns directed against media outlets and journalists in Moldova. In the context of the election campaign, there has been an alarming increase in public attacks and slanderous messages that seek to undermine the reputation of media professionals and affect their work.<\/p>\r\n
Intimidation, destabilization, and discrediting of the independent press are the main purpose of some denigration campaigns launched on social networks, messaging platforms and in several televised interventions that took place in an electoral context. Such actions put undue pressure on journalists who, in the spirit of correct information, contribute to public transparency and the fight against corruption. These harmful campaigns create a climate of hostility and intolerance towards the independent press, seriously affecting the public\u2019s right to fair and objective information.<\/p>\r\n
Please remember that the legislation of Moldova guarantees freedom of expression, protects the honor, dignity, and safety of journalists. The actions of intimidation, threat, defamation, and spread of false information aimed at journalists constitute serious misconduct, which must be firmly and promptly sanctioned by authorities. The lack of effective and rapid countermeasures generates impunity and encourages the perpetuation of these practices, destructive for a democratic society.<\/p>\r\n
The IJC urges all journalists and media outlets targeted by such hostile campaigns to use all available legal means to obtain recognition and redress of the damage suffered. We encourage the injured press to take legal action against the perpetrators of the attacks in order to have their rights restored by means of publishing of denials and expression of public apologies.<\/p>\r\n
Within the limits of available resources, the IJC provides legal assistance and advice to bona fide<\/a> journalists and media outlets, supporting efforts to protect press freedom and defend the public\u2019s right to be properly informed.<\/p>
