In the first semester of the 2025-2026 academic year, twenty female teachers and one male teacher from 10 educational institutions in the Republic of Moldova implemented the Program to integrate media literacy concepts into Romanian language classes in the 6th grade and English language classes in the 10th grade. Organized by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) in partnership with DW Akademie and supported by the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), the program helped train a generation of students who are more aware and better prepared to navigate the information space. On November 28, 2025, as part of a follow-up activity, participants shared experiences, success stories, and best practices accumulated during the program.<\/p>\r\n

Ina Grejdeanu<\/strong>, director of strategic development at IJC, acknowledged that she was impressed by the enthusiasm and determination of teachers who manage to do great things in the field of media education, often under difficult conditions. “You have our gratitude for your involvement. At IJC, we have been promoting media education for many years, in various formats, projects, and ways. And every year, when we take analyze the results, we realize that we are here thanks to your enthusiasm, passion, and dedication. You have our admiration for what you do and for the impact you create in the communities you come from,” said Ina Grejdeanu.<\/p>\r\n

Cristina Leva<\/strong>, DW Akademie project officer, mentioned that DW Akademie supported the IJC in promoting the most courageous ideas. “Three years ago, DW supported the initiative to integrate media literacy into core subjects, having previously contributed to the introduction of the subject ‘Media Education’ in schools. It takes a lot of courage to start and carry out such initiatives. We are happy to see active promoters of media education among you. The results are very good, commensurate with the effort you have put in. Thank you for your dedication and for the way you transform the new content studied by students into valuable experiences,” said Cristina Leva.<\/p>\r\n

During the follow-up event, the teachers involved in the program in the first semester of the 2025-2026 school year shared their experience of integrating media education into Romanian language classes in the 6th grade and English language classes in the 10th grade. In August, they attended a training program<\/a> and received the modules needed to pilot the program.<\/p>\r\n

Trainer Natalia Gr\u00eeu<\/strong> and Lithuanian Media Education Project Manager Arminas Varanauskas<\/strong> conceptualized the methodology for integrating media education into Romanian and English language classes, developed the piloting tools, trained the teachers, and provided them with didactic and methodological support. The two experts also guided the teachers throughout the implementation of the program.<\/p>\r\n

“We noticed an increase in student engagement when they were put in the role of creators. In this process, they developed their media-specific vocabulary, and the content on the difference between facts and opinions or on the analysis of advertising products had a particular impact. At the same time, teachers broadened their methodological horizons, integrating new methods and approaches into teaching English and Romanian. Students’ listening and speaking skills improved naturally as they interacted with both media content and each other. The topics of the lessons – from extreme sports and the influence of social media to cyberbullying and travel vlogs – resonate with the interests of teenagers and make learning relevant and important to them,” said Natalia Gr\u00eeu.<\/p>\r\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery thb_columns=”small-6 thb-5″ lightbox=”mfp-gallery” images=”53903,53909,53921,53912,53915″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\r\n

The teachers acknowledged that teaching media education content in Romanian and English was a challenge for both them and their students, but it proved to be a valuable experience. During the lessons, the students conducted interviews, produced news bulletins, vox pops, podcasts, video materials, and information leaflets, analyzed a socio-cultural event, and critically approached various types of information, without affecting the basic content of the two disciplines.<\/p>\r\n

Integrating media education into English helped students become more confident, independent, and expressive, while also developing their critical thinking, English communication skills, and digital skills. The tasks they had in class were inspired by real life, which sparked even more interest in the students towards the new content they were studying. Thus, they learned to distinguish between facts and opinions, to understand how to consume and analyze media, and to become responsible media creators. The results show that students have stronger communication skills, have learned to structure their ideas, and can analyze media content.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

The pilot project demonstrated that Romanian language and literature is a fertile ground for developing media skills. Lessons became more dynamic, students actively participated in discussions, developing a healthy critical spirit. They learned to ask open-ended questions that elicit detailed answers, practiced active listening, and learned to make a clear distinction between facts and opinions. Students appreciated activities that included media support. This sparked their curiosity and interest, making them realize that media education is not a luxury but a necessity that helps them consciously consume the information they interact with.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n

Integrating media education elements into English increased students’ motivation and involvement, giving them access to authentic language that was relevant to their interests. This approach developed their critical thinking and digital skills, helping them become more responsible in the online environment and aware of the impact of public posts. Students improved their ability to formulate clear, concise messages adapted to the digital space, learned to verify information, and became creators of media content. By practicing source analysis, fact-checking, and arguing ideas, they strengthened not only their media skills but also their level of English language proficiency.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery thb_columns=”small-6 thb-5″ lightbox=”mfp-gallery” images=”53924,53927,53930,53958,53961″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery thb_columns=”small-6 thb-5″ lightbox=”mfp-gallery” images=”53939,53942,53945,53948,53951″ img_size=”full” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\r\n

In total, during the three years of piloting the integrated approach of media literacy concepts into Romanian and English lessons (2023-2025), 62 teachers from 32 educational institutions developed their media education skills. At the same time, over 1,500 students experienced in their Romanian and English classes how media education can be integrated into core subjects.<\/p>\r\n

The project “Strengthening of Media an Information Literacy (MIL) in the Republic of Moldova: Piloting the integrative approach in formal education” is implemented by the IJC in partnership with the Deutsche Welle Akademie and with the support of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).<\/em><\/p>\r\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]
