Media NGOs Condemn Repeated Attacks on the Press by Mayor Ion Ceban

Non-governmental organizations in the media sector condemn the inappropriate behavior of Chisinau’s Mayor, Ion Ceban, who has once again attacked and intimidated journalists by making unfounded accusations.

During a recent press conference held on February 21, the mayor avoided answering questions from TV8 reporter Ștefan Bejan, accusing the media outlet of being the “speaking-tube and diaper” of the ruling party, Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). Additionally, Ion Ceban referred to TV8 as a “manipulative television” with “yellow-tinted glasses.”

One day earlier, on February 20, after inviting the press to an inauguration event for a kindergarten building, Ion Ceban posted on Facebook that the “Yellow Press” was “dumbing down the population with news about the failed PAS government.”

This is not the first time the mayor of Chisinau has displayed inappropriate and intimidating behavior towards the press. Media NGOs have repeatedly highlighted situations where Ion Ceban unjustifiably attacked and accused journalists.

We strongly condemn and disapprove of Mayor Ion Ceban’s hostile behavior towards the press. We insistently request him to refrain from such condemnable practices.

We remind everyone that the Law on Freedom of Expression explicitly states that every person has the right to freedom of expression, and the media has the responsibility to inform the public about matters of public interest and conduct investigative journalism in accordance with its responsibilities.

We urge Mayor Ion Ceban to adopt appropriate behavior and avoid any form of intolerance towards the press.
