Strengthening of media and information literacy (MIL) in the Republic of Moldova: Piloting the integrative approach in formal education

  • Sponsors: Deutsche Welle Akademie and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany
  • Objective: The project supports activities to encourage critical thinking among media consumers, especially teachers and students.
  • Activities: piloting the Program for integrating media education content into core school subjects; mentoring teachers within training and professional development programs, using the new content; organizing Media Literacy Week; conducting the third and the fourth editions of the „Media Literacy – Priority in My School” competition; organizing the second and the third editions of the Media Literacy Forum in partnership with Internews.
  • Results: Training and developing media education competencies for 60 teachers from 30 selected schools involved in implementing the Program on integrating media education content into core school subjects, approved by the Ministry of Education and Research. Over 1,500 students developed their media education skills during Romanian language classes in the 6th grade and English language classes in the 10th grade. Hundreds of students and teachers took part in three editions of Media Education Week. More than 150 teachers participated in two editions of the Media Education Forum, where they discussed the prospects of media education in the Republic of Moldova.
