The IJC has Published the Updated Version of the Media Education Textbook for 7 and 8 Grades

Starting from the 2024-2025 academic year, secondary school students (7 and 8 grades) will study the optional Media Education course using a new textbook. Its content was updated by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) to keep pace with recent changes and developments in the field. The authors of the textbook are education experts Dr. Loretta Handrabura and Natalia Grîu.

The textbook was revised based on the curriculum for the Media Education course for secondary school, approved in 2018, and is intended for both teachers and students in 7 and 8 grades. The revision took into account digital innovations and changes that have occurred in recent years, integrating new examples to help students better understand media education, develop critical thinking, and consume information responsibly.

The IJC will provide the updated textbooks free of charge to teachers who teach the optional Media Education course. The PDF version of the textbook can be accessed and downloaded here: ROM.

To date, the IJC has trained 214 primary school teachers, 191 lower secondary school teachers, and 242 high school educators. The Media Education optional course has been taught in Moldovan schools since 2017 and is included in the framework program of the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Moldova at all three educational levels: primary, secondary, and high school. The IJC has developed the curriculum and textbooks for Media Education, which are available to teachers and students.

In 2023, the IJC updated the Media Education textbook for 3 and 4 grades. The PDF version of the textbook can be accessed and downloaded here: ROM and RUS.

In the coming months, the IJC will also update the high school textbook in both Romanian and Russian.

This activity is part of the project supported by Sweden “Media Literacy Advancement and Support to Moldovan Media” and implemented by Internews in Moldova, which aims to contribute towards the growth of a diverse, independent and financially viable media landscape in Moldova, and to empower Moldovan youth to navigate their complex information environment.
